Weekday Bail Division

What is the Bail Division?

The Chief Magistrate has established the Bail Division to centralise and enhance the efficiency of weekday bail matters across New South Wales, ensuring a more consistent and streamlined process.

What kinds of cases does it handle?

The Bail Division focuses on adult fresh custody matters in regional NSW, including:

• Police bail refusals – when police do not to grant bail.
• Executed arrest warrants – when a warrant is acted on and leads to an arrest.
• Detention applications – requests to keep someone in custody or release them often for a breach of bail conditions.

How does it work?

All hearings are virtual, meaning they happen online instead of in a physical courtroom. Defendants, lawyers, police prosecutors, and support people join the session using Audio Visual Link (AVL).

Can I watch the hearings?

The Bail Division is generally open to the public. If you wish to observe proceedings, you are welcome to do so. To receive access details, please contact BailDivisionRegistry@justice.nsw.gov.au for instructions on joining the online session. Please note that in some limited cases, hearings may be closed to the public at the court’s discretion.

• Your client’s name

The Bail Division Registry will then provide you with dial-in details and register your information against your client’s matter.
